'I know you, don't I?'

Five words - that's all it takes to plunge Mike Wingate and his family into mortal danger. Mike doesn't recognise the crippled stranger who approaches him at a party... but the stranger seems to know all about him. What has Mike done? Do they have the wrong man? Overnight, the threats become attacks, and Mike, his wife, and their young daughter learn they aren't safe anywhere - especially not their own home. He doesn't know who they are. He doesn't know what they want. But there's no time to figure it out - because his enemies have killed before, and he's next.

You know there's a problem with a suspense/thriller novel when you're not only able to put it down and return to it days later, but when you guess the big secret fairly soon in the book. I got hold of this book because I enjoyed a more recent story by the author, Orphan X, which I definitely recommend. I'm not as enthusiastic about this one. The protagonist created himself, in a manner of speaking, having been abandoned by his father when hardly more than a toddler and winding up in dismal foster care for the remainder of his "childhood". Now a happily married father, successful in business and with a conscience that he apparently grew from scratch, since no one provided a role model for him, he suddenly discovers there's a target on his back...and on his family's, as well. Why? This book isn't written tightly enough. Mike Wingate spends entirely too much time agonizing over his plight, trying to figure out what's going on. Since I liked Orphan X and wasn't too keen on this novel, I'm going to read some more of the author's work. It could be that he is one of those writers who are either very good or very bad and bounce around from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Michael Wingate has finally achieved success; beginning as a construction laborer and advancing to being a developer of energy efficient homes, he has been selected to receive an award from the governor of his state. He is certainly a long way from his foster home past. But abruptly his life changes. A subcontractor has installed substandard pipes in his development and has disappeared. But far worse, he starts to get ominous threats his house is broken into and his young daughter Kat is accosted at her school by a strange man. He begins to suspect that his unknown past, about which he broods a great deal, has intruded into his life.

When the police response to him is almost hostile, Mike knows that he has to call upon his foster home bud, Shep, who knows how to operate on the other side of the law, whether it be stealing, cracking a safe, using high tech, etc. At this point, the intensity ratchets up considerably. A couple of most lethal dudes are in serious pursuit, and Mike has actually become a suspect. The action becomes compelling, frantic, and somewhat implausible. After several narrow escapes, car chases and crashes, and the like, it appears, strangely enough, that casino gambling on Indian land is somehow involved.

The action and the human drama do keep the interest level high in this thriller. Yet one wonders if police departments are really that incapable or corrupt or whether the nasty criminals portrayed would show the hesitation and ineptitude that these do. There is no doubt that the foster home experiences of Shep and Mike are deeply ingrained in them. Bad boy Shep is probably the more interesting of the two. The book is a compelling read if one can look past the over the top aspects.
This book was too slow for me.
Definitely gripping. Couldn't put it down. Started with Orphan X and now working my way through all titles.
As good as Vince Flynn but with a variety of main characters. Loved it.
Hurwitz is a master writer. This book, and all his others (so far!) are exquisitely detailed, well-crafted pieces of very believable action-packed fiction. Worthy of the investment!
Another, "I cant put it down." Nice twist on the "why" of what the heck is going on. Loved the Shep character as the side kick. Remember folks, Evan is back January 30th in Hell Bent! That is also my birthday so it will be a treat to have him back in action!
I started kind of slow with this book, but then as the story built I could t out it down. At times there were some parts I didn't care for or thought necessary, but then back in track. This was enjoyable d painful all at the same time. I want more closure on the characters, that's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. Just a little short chapter. This story took me on a ride - Yahoo!!
I really enjoy this writer's work. He really makes you feel as if you know the characters well. I felt this novel could have been just as enjoyable had it been shorter. Interesting that he included a character with cerebral palsy- and one of the bad guys no less. My sister suffered from cerebral palsy and the description of his ailment was quite accurate.
